Magnetic Fields in Dublin this week.
Someone posted this on thumped earlier. Stevin Merritt performing on "Good Day Atlanta," a morning news show in ... well it's pretty obvious. The song is great but everything before it is just sheer awkward hilarity. I'm not going to the gig, this nearly makes me want to now.

Eat yer heart out Holy Fuck
This is the Nude "remix" to end all Nude remixes ...
Big Ideas (don't get any) from James Houston on Vimeo.
I'm a student graduating from the Glasgow School of Art's visual communication course in a few days. This is my final project.
Radiohead held an online contest to remix "Nude" from their album - "In Rainbows" This was quite a difficult task for everybody that entered, as Nude is in 6/8 timing, and 63bpm. Most music that's played in clubs is around 120bpm and usually 4/4 timing. It's pretty difficult to seamlessly mix a waltz beat into a DJ set.
This resulted in lots of generic entries consisting of a typical 4/4 beat, but with arbitrary clips from "Nude" thrown in so that they qualified for the contest.
Thom Yorke joked at the ridiculousness of it in an interview for NPR radio, hinting that they set the competition to find out how people would approach such a challenging task.
I decided to take the piss a bit, as the contest seemed to be in that spirit.
Based on the lyric (and alternate title) "Big Ideas: Don't get any" I grouped together a collection of old redundant hardware, and placed them in a situation where they're trying their best to do something that they're not exactly designed to do, and not quite getting there.
It doesn't sound great, as it's not supposed to.
I missed the contest deadline, so I'm offering it here for you to enjoy.
Sinclair ZX Spectrum - Guitars (rhythm & lead)
Epson LX-81 Dot Matrix Printer - Drums
HP Scanjet 3c - Bass Guitar
Hard Drive array - Act as a collection of bad speakers - Vocals & FX

Tomorrow (week), tomorrow (week), I love ya tomorrow (week)
You're only 8 days away.
If this video is to be believed I'll be spending next Friday evening staring at a darkened stage.

Keith Olbermann
Generally I think that the prevalent style of US news where the hosts editorialise at length is really bad journalism. Whether it's by the likes of O'Reilly or Hannitty on Fox News or from someone like Olbermann who is from a completely opposite political perspective (and one that's more palatable to my own). And we get it, Bush has made some massive errors and the not many people like him any more.
Moreover this is mostly a music blog and I never touch on politics (what's this Lisbon thing?) here.
All the same, Jesus Christ this is some incredible TV.

Bell Orchestre news.
There's a new Bell Orchestre recording in progress.
We are working with John McEntire at
Soma Electronic Music Studios in Chicago.
It will be worth the wait.
This is good news. I really liked the orchestral take on post-rock that this lot had on Recording a Tape the Colour of the Light and with Arcade Fire off the road for a year hopefully they'll get over here at some point.
"Les Lumieres" live ...

Tom is coming.
He doesn't say where, and he doesn't say when. But he says he'll be playing here ...
Despite what I'd initally been told it's probably not going to be the NCH. 2 people that work there have been in touch saying that he's not pencilled in on the books.

The Amen Break
I think this is really interesting. The history of a 6 second drum sample originally recorded in 1969 that helped shape music over the course of the past 2 decades.

Talking shite with Will Oldham.
There's a new Bonny "Prince" Billy album out next month. A demo from one of the songs on it is up at the drag city website. He's also playing Ireland in June. Edit: The 15th in Vicar St. with Baby Dee and Paul Curreri.
Here he is tripping on mushrooms. The anti drugs people should use it as a deterrent. "Do you ever speak directly to either the moon or the sun?" Jesus Christ.

A reason to watch Tubridy Tonight.
The National will be appearing on Tubridy Tonight on May 10th ahead of their 3 night stand in The Olympia. Hopefully they'll be allowed to play live instead of the usual RTE bullshit of having to sing over backing tracks.
Oh and they've added a new Irish date. 8th July in Mandella Hall in Belfast.
Here they are appearing on Letterman performing a great version of Fake Empire.

Lots of Tom Waits chatter around the place this morning.
Wait n' see I guess. In the meantime here's a video someone sent me last night. Cheers Tim.
